here is no short cut when it comes to health and fitness. While consumers have a vast choice when it comes to weight-loss pills, trendy diets, fat reduction procedures and exercise programs, the tried and tested formula for staying fit still requires a major change in lifestyle. This means having a good diet and proper exercise.

While most fitness-conscious individuals would happily take on a sport or an exercise program, only a few are open to limiting their food intake to “healthy dishes.”

Fitness diets are synonymous to bland and tasteless meals. While packed in nutritional value, the pleasure of eating automatically disappears because of its non-appealing taste.

Most healthy dishes are low in sodium mainly because common salt is known to cause high blood pressure and complications like strokes, heart attack and kidney damage.

It’s a good thing home-makers have discovered the wonders of PANSALT®, the good-tasting low-sodium mineral salt with Iodine. Rich in essential minerals like magnesium and potassium, PANSALT® contains only 56-57% sodium. It gives the same savory flavor of common salt without its harmful effects. Ideal for home and industrial use, PANSALT® can be used for all types of food preparations like baked goods, meat, fish, fast food, snacks, dairy products and many more.

The goodness of PANSALT® can also be enjoyed in the healthy dishes served by the Sexy Chef Cafe, the country’s leading health food delivery. Known for successfully promoting weight-loss via nutritious and flavorful meals delivered at your doorstep, Sexy Chef is owned and operated by Barni Alejandro, daughter and sister of popular singers Hajji and Rachel Alejandro.

Sexy Chef started in 2004 offering dishes based on the South Beach diet, a program developed by Dr. Agatston of Miami Florida. The program caters to two diet phases, the first one is designed around ample servings of lean protein, beneficial fats and a healthy amount of vegetables, while the second phase reintroduces healthy carbohydrates with whole grains and fruits.

The two week package is inclusive of breakfast, lunch, dinner, two snacks and dessert. “Everybody was predicting that South Beach would be one of those fad diets that would eventually be forgotten. Three years after it was first introduced, it still is popular. Most of our first few clients are now on the maintenance level. This means they have reached their ideal weight and would like to continue with the healthy diet. But we still have a lot of clients who wish to start on the South Beach diet so they can lose weight. “

Aside from the dishes from the South Beach diet, the Sexy Chef also offers fit meals. “These are healthy dishes you can eat anytime. Made of low-sodium, low-fat, lean, and whole grain ingredients, fit meals are tasty, just as they are affordable.”

The Sexy Chef also prepares all the meals for Gold’s Gym Cafe in Robinson’s Galleria and Glorietta, Ayala Center. Diners can enjoy PANSALT® ’s low sodium goodness in delectable yet nutritious treats like Chicken Adobo Wrap, Pizzadilla Wrap, Pasta Bolognese, Pesto, Lean Canadian Bacon Lettuce and Tomato Sandwich, Grilled Chicken Pesto Sandwich, Cajun Chicken Sandwich and many more. Not to be missed are their low-fat and sugar-free Food for the Gods and Carrot cake.

fter a little over four years of living in the Philippines, Swiss-German chef Hans Neukom has formed two interesting notions on Filipino food. First, Filipinos generally go for the strong pull between salty and sweet. Second, Filipino food’s identity is fuzzy vis-à-vis, say, Thai or Malay food, but therein lies the challenge for Filipino cuisine to evolve more fully by using pan-Asian herbs and spices that are also found in the country.

Chef Hans tackles these two challenges manfully—and joyfully—as resident chef of the Palms Country Club in Alabang by reeducating the Filipino palate. He recalls that for a time many members were asking for a “sweeter” spaghetti sauce—doubtless the standard taste of many a spaghetti sauce variation in the country. But he had consistently refused to put sugar in the sauce—“unless requested by a member for his or her child or guest,” Chef Hans says. Likewise, Chef Hans goes easy on the salt to balance the tendency of many Filipino diners to season their food with the usual soy or fish sauce.

With Palms’ emphasis on health and fitness, PANSALT® was the logical choice as the main flavoring agent of the Palms kitchens. “PANSALT® is excellent because you don’t lose the original flavor of salt,” says Chef Hans. “And our members have been very satisfied with the results.”

Chef Hans says that the club’s increasingly health-conscious patrons have been adapting to health trends slowly but surely. The consistent basic education on food has yielded some positive changes: today many diners at the club would prefer brown rice to white. As for the switch to PANSALT®, Chef Hans agrees that once the diners realize the product’s health benefits, they will definitely go for the healthier salt.

PANSALT® cuts sodium chloride to 56-57 percent and is rich in the essential minerals magnesium and potassium. Its unique and patented formula is the product of years of research and study by Finnish health experts. It has the same savory flavor as common salt, minus the sodium overload. It has also been found to remarkably improve the therapeutic effects of drugs used for the treatment of high blood pressure, and is virtually devoid of the harmful effects characteristic of common salt.

Because it has found great consumer acceptance—it has the best taste profile among low-sodium salts in the market, without any bitter aftertaste—PANSALT® is already being used in more than a thousand food products from hundreds of manufacturers across the world. PANSALT® flavors prepared meat products and processed food; prepared fish, dairy, hamburger, and bakery products; snack food; seasonings; and flour mixtures.

PANSALT®’s debut in the Palms Country Club no doubt sets the health trend in the right direction. Palms Country Club has a Japanese restaurant (Nishijin), the friendly all-day Café Asiana, and a Western-dining restaurant (The Continental). And the Palms community, comprising trendsetters as well, should be among the best spokespersons for the health merits of PANSALT®.

The shift to healthier options can be seen in Café Asiana’s promotion of chicken and fish as protein staples, and whole wheat grains as carbohydrate sources. The key to health, says Chef Hans, lies in good balance: “Any diet that deprives the eater of anything—carbohydrates, sugars, and protein is bound to fail.”

The Palms’ faith in PANSALT® is so great that their shakers are stuffed with the healthy salt. With all the cooking lined up for the Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day in the next several weeks, it’s probably time you did the same thing at home.

ating healthfully isn’t as difficult as you think—even in the thick of celebrating traditional feasts like Valentine’s Day. Balance is always the key, and making the right choices about what you’re eating. With the importance of moderation and portion size thus recognized, the rule to remember is that if you eat 90 percent healthy all of the time, the other 10 percent of the time you can eat whatever you feel like eating.

For the love month of February, there’s little to fear about the percentage rule as PANSALT®, the good-tasting, low-sodium salt, becomes the kitchen mainstay at My Spoon, a fine-dining restaurant on Mother Ignacia Street in Quezon City, beside ABS-CBN. My Spoon, famous for its many ways with oysters and its selection of fine wines, has become the preferred venue among media celebrities.

The surefire combination of healthy and classy promises to give the usual Valentine date fare a fresh twist. The V-day menu at My Spoon flavored by PANSALT® features Oysters a la Monique, a house specialty of fresh oysters and slow-roasted tomatoes and herbs in lemon sorbet packed with seaweeds and caviar; a healthy-option Grilled Vegetables Salad packed with chicken strips and drizzled with balsamic vinegar; the main dish of Potato-shredded lapu-lapu (grouper) with light lobster sauce; and the PANSALT®-lined, watermelon-flavor Pink Margarita.

Chefs and industrial kitchens across the world have attested to PANSALT®’s full salt flavor even as it cuts sodium by 56-57 percent. Common salt is 98-100 percent sodium chloride, which is known for its harmful effects on humans as it increases the risk of developing high blood pressure and its complications, such as strokes, heart attacks, kidney damage, and possibly asthma and some cancers.

Imported by Accord International Inc., PANSALT® is a unique, patented mineral salt with iodine that gives food the same savory flavor as common salt, without its harmful effects.

ontrary to popular belief, hypertension does not strike only men and women in their 40s. Statistics at the Department of Health claim that 1 of 10 Filipinos aged 15 and above has hypertension, while a 2004 National Nutrition and Health Survey reports that 4 of 10 Filipinos aged 20-29 are pre-hypertensive and require a lifestyle change to prevent progression to hypertension.

These figures should not come as a surprise considering the eating habits of many Filipinos young and old, which include a marked preference for salty, processed, and junk food. The amount of salt in processed foods or ready-to-eat foods is 75% more compared to home-cooked foods.

Medical experts and evidence-based science have shown that too much salt is harmful to humans as it increases the risk of developing high blood pressure and its complications, such as strokes, heart attacks, kidney damage, and possibly asthma and some cancers. The culprit has been identified as sodium chloride, which the human body needs only in small doses and which is the main stuff of common salt.

While the good news is cutting back on salt may help keep blood pressure levels on the healthy range, salt as a widely used flavoring agent is hard to replace. The bad news is that the low-sodium products which had been brought to the market in the last several years have disappointed consumers, not least because of their bitter and metallic aftertaste.

There’s a good chance, however, that the search for the healthier salt alternative has come to an end for Filipino health buffs and those on special dietary regimens. PANSALT®, the healthier salt rich in the essential minerals magnesium and potassium, is now available locally, after enjoying huge popularity in Europe including the UK and in Asia and the Pacific, including Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and Australia. PANSALT®, the mineral salt imported from Finland, cuts sodium chloride to 56-57 percent and has the best taste profile among low-sodium salts in the market, without any bitter aftertaste.

 •  22 out of 100 Filipino adults have blood pressure higher than 140/90 mm Hg.
 •  Blood pressure starts to rise at age 40.
 •  Among Filipinos, 20-29 years old, almost 4 out of 10 are pre-hypertensive & require a lifestyle change to prevent progression to hypertension.
*Source: National Nutrition & Health Survey 2003-2004

The human body needs only very small amounts of both Sodium and Chloride. Common salt composed of 98-100% Sodium Chloride, is known to be the most significant cause of high blood pressure, also called arterial hypertension. Even a small raise in blood pressure increases the risk for coronary and other serious cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attacks, strokes, or heart failure.

In most countries, the per capita consumption of salt is known to be far too high compared with what is required by the body to function properly. Doctors and health organizations recommend that Sodium Chloride intake be reduced in order to limit the negative impact on the cardiovascular system. This is supported by the recommendations of the World Health Organization and Food & Agriculture Organization (Diet, Nutrition and the Prevention of Chronic Diseases Report 2003, Geneva) that the daily salt intake should be less than 5 g per day.

Various studies show that the harmful effect of Sodium Chloride can be decreased or even eliminated if our diet is rich in Potassium and Magnesium. Adequate Potassium intake lowers blood pressure and is protective against stroke and cardiac arrhythmias.

After years of research and in line with these studies, Finnish researches have developed PANSALT®.

PANSALT® is virtually devoid of the harmful effects characteristic of common salt. More than reducing Sodium Chloride intake, it also markedly enhances the positive effect of blood pressure lowering medications.

Previously available low-Sodium salts have proven to be adequate in reducing Sodium Chloride intake. However, they have been unacceptable because of their bitter, metallic taste, which has lead to a high rate of rejection even by health conscious consumers and hypertensive patients.

Today's health conscious consumers constantly demand better tasting and healthier food products. PANSALT® gives various food items the same good taste and technological properties as regular salt but it does not have the bitter aftertaste, characteristic of other low-Sodium salts.

PANSALT® is a quality product of Oriola-KD formerly Oriola Oy of Finland, imported and distributed in the Philippines by Accord Int’l, Inc.

ANSALT® is probably the world’s most researched low-Sodium salt. The formulation of PANSALT® involved hypertension and health specialists and has been tested for safety by a multi-disciplinary group in Finland comprised of representatives from the National Public Health Institute and Department of Community Health and Research, Institute of Public Health.

A study on PANSALT® noted a correlation between its use and diabetes, with an improvement in oral glucose tolerance. Other studies showed that PANSALT® does not interfere with anti-hypertensive medications including ACE Inhibitor Enalapril, Ramipril, Metoprolol, Felodipine, and Carvedolol. Double blind trials show its benefits on high blood pressure patients in general.

PANSALT® inventor, Dr. Heikki Karppanen of the University of Helsinki in Finland also produced a landmark study to show how salt reduction and the use of PANSALT® helped contribute to the heart health in Finland over a period of 20 years.
In recent studies, the effects of PANSALT® have been extensively compared with those of common salt. The following are the results:

Effects on Taste
PANSALT® produces the same savory taste as common salt in various food items.

Effects on Blood Pressure
PANSALT®, instead of common salt in the diet, effectively lowers blood pressure both in spontaneously hypertensive rats and stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats, two widely used models of human hypertension. A good anti-hypertensive effect of PANSALT® in humans has also been reported. PANSALT® also produced a pronounced improvement in the blood pressure lowering effect of Enalapril (Renitec/Vasotec) and other widely used anti-hypertensive drugs.

Effects on Life Span
PANSALT® prolonged the lifespan of spontaneously hypertensive rats more than three-fold and almost to the same extent as withdrawal from all salt from the diet.

Importance of Potassium, Magnesium, and I-Lysine in PANSALT®
PANSALT® Potassium and Magnesium have beneficial effects on blood pressure, the heart and blood veins. Their protective effect is even better than the effect gained by a reduction of Sodium only.

Potassium and Magnesium also activate the function of the kidneys and in this way, enhance the excretion of harmful Sodium from the body. In PANSALT® mineral salt, there is 28% Potassium Chloride and 12% Magnesium Sulphate.

Lysine, an essential amino acid is a protein component of PANSALT®. Lysine enhances the salty taste of Potassium and Magnesium in PANSALT®. It also completely masks the bitter taste typically originating from Potassium Chloride and Magnesium Sulphate. There is 2% Lysine Hydrochloride in PANSALT®.

Iodine is necessary for the proper brain cell development in children, and their cognitive development. Iodine deficiency leads to goiter problems. The amount of Iodine in PANSALT® is 25mg/kg. This is based on the official recommendation of the National Food Agency of Finland.

Absence of Adverse Effects
No signs of hyperkalaemia, hypermagnesaemia, or any other harmful effects have been observed during the use of PANSALT®.

The use of PANSALT® instead of common salt produces remarkable anti-hypertensive effects, prolongs the life span and markedly improves the effects of commonly used anti-hypertensive drugs without any signs of adverse effects.

What is PANSALT®?

PANSALT® is a low-Sodium mineral salt containing Iodine that has the taste, look and texture of common salt.

PANSALT® is composed of:

56-57% Sodium Chloride
28% Potassium Chloride
12% Magnesium Sulphate
2% Lysine HydroChloride
0.0036% Iodine

Does PANSALT® contain salt?

Yes. In fact, PANSALT® is salt. Its unique patented formula allows for the reduction of its Sodium content. PANSALT® only has about half the Sodium found in common salt and is made nutritive by the essential minerals Potassium and Magnesium-- two important minerals for a healthy heart, not contained in common salt.

Who invented PANSALT®? How did PANSALT® come about?

PANSALT® is a quality innovation in health foods spearheaded by Heikki Karppanen, M.D., a Professor at the University of Helsinki, Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology in Finland.

Dr. Karppanen became involved in the study of salt and its harmful effects after he learned about the high incidence of heart attacks leading to deaths among families in North Karelia, Finland where they lived. He later discovered that it was the high Sodium and low mineral content in the soil in their area affecting their food chain that brought about these heart problems and deaths.

This inspired Dr. Karppanen towards the invention of PANSALT®. Together with Dr. Mildred Seelig, a Magnesium expert from the American College of Nutrition, studies towards the development of PANSALT® were completed. The collaboration of the two experts may be found in the Journal of the College.

Where does PANSALT® get its name?

“Pan” means “something general”, so PANSALT® could mean salt that can be used in all foods.

Is PANSALT® an organic food?

Being a Sodium-reduced mineral salt, PANSALT® has been approved as an ingredient for organic food products by the National Food Agency of Finland and the European Commission since 2001.

How is PANSALT® made?

PANSALT® is produced in Europe through a patented manufacturing process under GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) conditions. Its quality is equal to that for the making of pharmaceutical drugs.

Why is common salt harmful to me?

Common salt is 98-100% Sodium Chloride. Our body needs only small amounts of Sodium to function properly. The WHO (World Health Organization) recommends a dietary salt intake of less than 5g per day due to its high Sodium content.

In the average Filipino diet, our salt intake goes up to as much as 10-15g per day. Our use of condiments like toyo, patis and bagoong adds even more to our Sodium intake. This leads to higher risks of developing high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, stomach cancer, osteoporosis and kidney disease, among others.

You may wish to refer to The Salt Solution, Salt, Diet & Health, Salt Matters –consumer guides for further information on the harms of common salt.

Why is PANSALT® different from common salt?

PANSALT® was invented as a healthier alternative to common salt. Sodium Chloride, which is the primary component of common salt is harmful to the body when consumed in excess of the recommended dietary intake (less than 5g per day, per person). Unlike common salt (98-100% Sodium Chloride or 40% Sodium and 60% Chloride), PANSALT® only contains 56-57% Sodium Chloride.

Furthermore, PANSALT® has more nutritive value, having Magnesium, Potassium, Lysine and Iodine among its components. These are minerals with important health benefits to the body.

What are the advantages of using PANSALT®?

The advantages of using PANSALT® are many. Its primary benefit is the reduction of Sodium, which also means a reduction in the risk of acquiring hypertension and its serious complications including strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems.

A good dose of Magnesium found in PANSALT® may be beneficial both in the excretion of excess or harmful Sodium as well as in the secretion and function of Insulin in the body. Magnesium is also found in green veggies, bran cereals and nuts and seeds. The lack of this essential mineral is strongly related to high blood pressure and diabetes. A good source of information on further benefits of adequate Magnesium intake is The Magnesium Factor by Dr. Mildred Seelig.

Potassium, is another mineral component of PANSALT® which is helpful in getting rid of harmful Sodium in the body, thus contributing to lowered blood pressure. A good reference is The Magnesium Solution for High Blood Pressure by Dr. Jay S Cohen.

Other than Magnesium and Potassium, PANSALT® also contains Lysine, an essential limiting amino acid required for making proteins in the body. Lysine does not naturally occur in the human body and is consumed from daily foods like those containing PANSALT®.

Lastly, PANSALT® offers Iodine which is key to the proper brain cell development of children as well as to their cognitive development. The deficiency of Iodine may lead to goiter problems.

If I had reduced salt use already, why do I still need PANSALT®?

When we replace common salt with PANSALT®, we IMMEDIATELY reduce our predisposition to the harms of high Sodium intake. The World Health Organization's recommended dietary salt intake of less than 5g per day is really a maximum, as the body only needs 1.2g of Sodium Chloride to function properly.

The DOH (Department of Health) has released statistics of Filipinos with heart problems, which already constitutes about 30% of our population. In addition, the DOST (Department of Science & Technology) cited in its National Nutrition and Health Survey of 2003-2004 that 4 out of 10 Filipinos aged 20-29 years old are already pre-hypertensive and require a lifestyle change to prevent progression to hypertension.

With the high sodium content of the typical Filipino diet and the corresponding rise in the incidence of hypertension among Filipinos, PANSALT® is the wisest choice that can offer better health without compromising on good taste. Of course we also benefit from PANSALT®'s mineral components.

Who can use PANSALT®?

The average person who uses common salt can use PANSALT®. Based on the numerous studies conducted on PANSALT®, it does not have any adverse effects and it even helps improve the therapeutic effects of treatment drugs for hypertension. People on anti-hypertensive medication and those on diuretics, as well as kidney-impaired patients are still advised however to consult their doctor prior to use of PANSALT®.

How do I use PANSALT®?

PANSALT® can be used the same way we use common salt. One gram of PANSALT® equals one gram of common salt.

Can I use PANSALT® in my cooking?

Yes. PANSALT® acts just like common salt. Use PANSALT® in the same amounts by weight and in the same manner as when cooking with common salt.

Does PANSALT® taste different from common salt? Does it taste bitter like some low-Sodium salts?

PANSALT® tastes exactly like common salt. It will even enhance our cooking, as it does not suppress the natural flavor of foods, which excessive common salt does. PANSALT® has been professionally tested in Chicago, USA to be indistinguishable from common salt. It has also been used in the kitchens of McDonald’s Finland for 10 years now and patrons do not notice any difference in the taste of the food they serve.

Unlike other low-Sodium salts previously released in the market, PANSALT® does not have any bitter or metallic aftertaste; in fact, it will bring out the flavor of natural foods!

I heard that food can taste better with PANSALT®. WHY?

PANSALT® only contains about half the Sodium found in common salt. Too much use of common salt may desensitize our salt palate, making us increase our salt usage more and more as we age. With PANSALT® we can avoid this desensitization. PANSALT® even helps our palate recover its sensitivity over time so that we can more adequately taste the natural flavor of foods.

Is it safe to use PANSALT® everyday?

PANSALT® is good for EVERYDAY use. The components of PANSALT® are naturally occurring and present in everyday foods. It is safe for use in the kitchen as a cooking ingredient and as a tabletop condiment, having been professionally tested by a panel of Finnish specialists.

Because of its numerous health benefits, good taste and ease of use, PANSALT® is already being used in more than 1,000 food items in Europe and Japan, as well as in the kitchens of major fastfoods in Finland like McDonalds. PANSALT® is used for prepared meat products and processed food; prepared fish, dairy, hamburger, sausages and bakery products; snack food; seasonings and sauces; margarines; and flour mixtures for bread and biscuits, among others.

I use PANSALT® to reduce my blood pressure. Do I have to cook my food separately from my family's food?

No. High Sodium intake is harmful to everyone, children and adults alike. Our family will also benefit from using PANSALT®.

I take medication for hypertension. Can I still take PANSALT®?

Yes. PANSALT® has been clinically proven to be effective in lowering blood pressure without interfering with anti-hypertensive medications. The laboratory-tested medications include Enalapril, Ramipril, Metoprolol, Felodipine and Carvedolol.

Can a person who has diabetes use PANSALT®?

Magnesium, an essential mineral component of PANSALT® is beneficial for diabetics as it helps in the secretion and function of Insulin in the body. Still, diabetic patients are advised to consult their doctor prior to use of PANSALT®. A professional and very readable book on Magnesium and diabetes, is The Magnesium Factor by Dr. Mildred Seelig, a very renowned and respected Magnesium researcher.

Can a person suffering from kidney disease use PANSALT®?

Kidney patients are generally advised to avoid additional Sodium in their diet. PANSALT® is low in Sodium and may serve the needs of some kidney patients better than common salt. However, your physician is the best person to advise you on this.

I love salt. Is there something wrong with me?

There is nothing wrong with you. Salt is a food enhancer – it brings out the taste of foods. However, a craving for salt is not inborn; it is acquired throughout life. Whole communities in various parts of the world have been found to live on very low salt and without salt supplementation and with no craving for salt, and not suffer cardiovascular diseases associated with high salt intake.

In the Philippines, salt and salty condiments have become staples in our everyday cooking and eating as they enhance our appetite. If we do not control our intake however, something may go wrong with our body. Controlling our salt intake need not mean, flavorless or bland food. With PANSALT® we can continue to enjoy good-tasting dishes that’s good for our health!

  • Ensure that the body of evidence from the scientific community about the dangers of excessive salt consumption is translated into policy by each individual Government around the world
  • Reduce salt added at home during cooking and at the table through a combination of media publicity and public health campaign e.g. the Food Standards Agency Campaign in the UK (

According to WASH research, there are variations in the salt levels in the same food products marketed in different countries around the world. A popular cereal brand for example that is marketed in the USA contains only 0.65g/100g salt, while the same product marketed in the UK and Ireland contains 2.25g/100g. Several other food products commonly consumed by both children and adults, including burgers and sandwiches served by multinational food chains were cited by WASH to contain varying salt levels in different countries.

Campbell, WASH Project Coordinator, expressed concern saying that “The scientific evidence shows that eating too much salt leads to raised blood pressure, which in turn causes heart disease and stroke. High salt diets have also been linked to stomach cancer and osteoporosis. These huge variations in salt contents show that the excuses of the food industry – that it is technically too difficult to reduce salt, and that customers will not accept the reductions – are rubbish. WASH research shows food companies have reduced salt levels in some countries – we want them to reduce the salt in all their products in all their markets.”

WASH is also concerned with the harmful effects of increased salt levels in children’s diets. A WASH research on products commonly consumed by children showed that a standard serving of a particular brand of cereal would already contribute 28% to a 6 year old child’s recommended daily salt intake.

WASH has cited the following target average salt intakes for children as recommended by the UK Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition:

Target Average Salt Intake (g/day)
0-6 months < 1g
7-12 months 1 g
1-3 years 2 g
4-6 years 3 g
7-10 years 5 g

WASH Chairman, Professor Graham MacGregor finds inspiration in the experience of Finland wherein a salt-reduction campaign since the 1970’s has led to a population-wide reduction in blood pressure and a parallel reduction in deaths from strokes and heart disease. In the USA, the American Medical Association has also recently voted to reduce the amount of salt added to food by industry by at least 50% in the next ten years.

With the dawn of increased global awareness on the hazards of salt consumption, consumers both young and old, as well as health advocates like WASH may find the answer to maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle with the good-tasting, low-sodium mineral salt, PANSALT®. WASH has interviewed Dr. Heikki Karppanen, inventor of PANSALT® to find out about the success of this product in contributing to the health of people from Finland.

Obesity and diabetes are two tightly interlinked conditions that almost always cannot exist without each other. Weight and fat gain, a high-salt and –sugar diet, and a sluggish lifestyle could all conspire to raise the levels of blood glucose and blood fat. Such conditions in turn raise health risks that, if untreated, could lead to more serious physical problems, among them type-2 diabetes.

Health-indicator statistics of the Department of Health rank diabetes as the ninth-leading cause of death in the Philippines, affecting one out of twenty-five Filipinos. Some 3.36 million Filipinos are estimated to be afflicted with diabetes, which is a chronic disease characterized by high blood-sugar levels resulting from defects in the body’s ability to use and produce insulin.

While the link between obesity and diabetes has long been established, recent findings have traced the relationship between salt intake and obesity. In a recently published report in the journal Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases, scientists from Finland claimed that the increased intake of salt has apparently played an important role in the increased consumption of soft drinks, and therefore in the increase of energy intake.

Dr. Heikki Karppanen of the University of Helsinki and Dr. Eero Mervaala of the University of Kuopio wrote, “Higher consumption of sweetened beverages was associated with both a greater magnitude of weight gain and an increased risk for development of type-2 diabetes.”

The groundbreaking research also noted the worldwide trend in the increase of age-adjusted blood pressure since the late 1980s. This increase, wrote the authors, “appears to coincide with the turn of the sales of food-grade salt from a decreasing trend to a rapid increase in the later 1980s and in the 1990s.” The study adds that increasing intakes of sodium found in common salt necessarily produce a progressive increase in thirst; and between 1997 and 2001, the energy intake from soft drinks also increased by 135 percent, adding about 278 kcal to the average person’s daily energy intake.
Common salt contains only sodium chloride, which is known to be the most significant cause of high blood pressure. Even a small rise in blood pressure increases the risk for coronary and other serious cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attacks, strokes or heart failure. It is a medical fact that the human body needs only very small amounts of both sodium and chloride.

The Finnish research drives home the relationship between salt and calorie intake that could lead to obesity and other health problems. But while people cannot live without these flavors, their consumption could be moderated to healthier levels. There are also healthier options now widely available, so while it’s not yet too late to switch to more health-conscious ways, it would be wise to explore healthy forms of sugar and salt.

Where to start after one has identified that sodium is the hidden enemy in common salt? So-called salt-free seasoning blends are a mixture of flavorful dried herbs and spices that don’t contain sodium chloride. Salt substitutes, on the other hand, replace some or all of the sodium in salt with other minerals such as potassium or magnesium. Potassium chloride is a common salt substitute. But salt substitutes, or some low-sodium salts, often taste bitter and aren’t recommended for people on a potassium-restricted diet.

Fortunately in the Philippines, there’s no need to go out further in search of healthy salt. PANSALT®, the good-tasting, low-sodium salt has been enjoying brisk sales in Metro Manila. Imported from Finland and distributed exclusively by Accord International, Inc., PANSALT® is the healthy mineral salt with Iodine that contains only 56-57 percent sodium, and is the product of extensive research by Finnish health experts.

PANSALT® is rich in the essential minerals Magnesium and Potassium, both of which help get rid of harmful sodium in the body. PANSALT® has further been found to remarkably improve the therapeutic effects of treatment drugs for hypertension. In addition, its component Magnesium plays a vital role in the secretion and function of insulin, making it very beneficial for those suffering from diabetes and its complications.

PANSALT® is virtually devoid of the harmful effects characteristic of common salt and has the best taste profile among all the healthy salt options and alternatives in the market today. So if you watch your diet to avoid or manage hypertension, diabetes or obesity, or if you simply wish to maintain a healthy lifestyle, PANSALT® is the tastier, healthier choice.
